We’re now within a month of my first blogging anniversary. There were many times over the past year that I was within a thread of throwing in the towel and reclaiming some of my time, but I decided to keep going. Not only does this little project provide a little bit of helpful side income, it’s also taught me so much about my own finances. I can’t stop just yet, since I have so much left to learn.

But time is something that seems to be at a premium lately. Soon, our second child will be born and immediately my life will change all over again. The rhythm my family has developed over the last two years will be obsolete and we’ll have to start over from scratch. In many ways, I’m both looking forward and not looking forward to the birth of this new child. It sounds crass, but it’s a side-effect of the uncertainty of our future and a little bit of fear.

Time is a commodity that, once used, can never be reclaimed. It only makes sense, then, to make the best use of every moment possible. For me, reading and writing are becoming ever more valuable. I wish I could share everything that I read with you, but since all of us are short on time, here is a brief sampling of some of the articles I liked this week:

The Christmas shopping season is upon us. Malls are cramped with people shuffling through racks trying to pick the best deals. Stores are opening earlier and and closing later while hoping to get a piece of the ever-shrinking spending pie. And I’m stuck here wondering how I’m going to get everything done in time for Christmas, birthdays, and the upcoming birth of our second child.

Honestly, I strongly dislike the “Material Christmas” season. It’s an orgy of careless spending, thoughtless gifting, and overeating - indulgences of every variety. I much prefer a quieter, simpler Christmas with family and the exchange of one or two meaningful gifts. But since I live in the “real world”, undertaking the task of Christmas shopping is still a required ritual.

Over the years, I’ve developed a few strategies to help cope with the stress of holiday shopping.

Prepare Early

Well before taking on the task of actually shopping for the presents, it’s important to develop a “game plan.” Starting in late October, I start figuring out what gifts my family would enjoy. I inventory their current fascinations and I’ll even directly ask them what they want. I want to be 100% sure that they will enjoy the gift I give them so my efforts and money don’t go to waste.

Once I have a good idea of what I’ll purchase, I tackle the circulars to find the best deals and how to best combine multiple purchases into one trip. In past years, I’ve even gone so far as to build a mini-timeline to help map out what stores I will hit, what I will get where, and about how long it should take. I’m serious about limiting my “holiday shopping experience”…

Know Your List and Your Store

When the day finally comes that you go shopping, it’s imperative that you know the shopping list almost, if not completely, by heart. If you’re standing in the store being jostled about by other harried shoppers, it’s easy to get flustered and lose track of the list. You’ll be busy trying to figure out what to do next instead of staying on task and getting the shopping done.

Before I enter a specific store, I’ll read over the list I built for that store. I do my best to map out the path I’ll take in my head before I enter so I can avoid the frustrations of searching a busy store for the gifts I intend to give. This sounds a bit mechanical and not very much fun, but I’ve found it essential for keeping my cool and dealing with the situation as best I can.

Get In and Get Out

For heaven’s sake, don’t dawdle once you get in the store! There are plenty of other people milling about in there causing nightmares for the staff and other shoppers. (Trust me on this one, I used to work retail and the “worst” Christmas shoppers were the ones clogging the aisles while they suffered from terminal indecision.) To make the trip as easy as possible on everyone:

Gather your purchases as quickly as you can in an orderly fashion

Be courteous to the other shoppers and workers

Organize your purchases before coming to the register

Have your method of payment ready before everything’s rung up

Smile, be polite, and leave the store with your purchases

Avoid the Rush

It’s hard not to think of cattle when the crazed consumerists are pressing their bodies against the locked doors of a store before dawn. And the mad rush that is triggered by the opening of said doors is just sad. Do yourself a favor and save your dignity by avoiding the nonsense that is “Black Friday.”

Great deals are to be found all season, not just on Black Friday - especially in a tough year such as this one. You’re not going to find any empty stores until mid-January, but you can avoid the worst of the rush by shopping at slower times.

If you go on a weekday morning (before lunch time), you’ll find a lot of elderly shoppers and a few stay-at-home moms, but the stores won’t be packed. Later in the day, you’ll find the shopping traffic much heavier. If you’re a night owl, shopping past midnight on an average weeknight at a 24-hour store such as Wal-Mart will find you greeted with a few odd stares and mostly-uncrowded aisles. The weekends are right out - everyone and their dog will be out and you won’t stand a chance.

Shop Online

Of course, the internet is open all day, every day. If you know your gift list well in advance, you can order everything online and let UPS do the worst of the work for you. This year, Amazon.com will be getting a lot more of my money than they have in years past. With the deals I’ve found there, my general loathing for the crowds, and the uncertainty of when the baby will arrive, the safety and security of shopping online looks great for us this year.

As Always, Have Fun

I’m a huge proponent of always having fun, no matter what you’re doing. Christmas shopping is about sharing your love with someone else and trying to give them the best gift for them. When you’re out braving the crowds, it helps to remember why you’re there. Keep love in your heart, be as kind and courteous to everyone as you can, and limit your exposure and everything should go fine.

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com

Just last week, I wrote about how Charter Cable really dropped the ball with me and lost me as a customer completely due to poor customer service (and unfair charges). To replace my outgoing cable service, I purchased a TV antenna on Amazon.com. After a few shipping delays, it finally arrived on Monday.

After opening the box and inventorying the parts, I realized that a few pieces were missing and one crucial part was broken. I was dismayed. The “savior” of my personal TV experience was defective and incomplete on arrival. I searched the box for the warranty and manufacturer contact information.

After I located the paper detailing the lifetime warranty, I called the phone number included. As the phone rang, I fully expected the typical customer service run-around and frustrating call center scripts. I mentally prepared myself for the upcoming battle which would pit my wits against a powerless employee. But once the call was answered, my preconceptions flew out the window.

I was immediately connected with a pleasant lady who listened patiently to my poor attempt to describe the missing and broken parts. She worked with me for about five minutes as we both made sure that we understood what parts were affected and then asked for my address and contact information so she could ship out replacement parts right away. No returning of the defective parts before they would help me; no accusations or implications of fraud from the employee; no “I’m sorry, I cannot help you” excuses. I received only outstanding customer service from a local, English-speaking, pleasant lady who did nothing but try to help me as best as she could. That’s how customer service should be!

I want to tip my hat to Antennas Direct. They are one of the few companies I’ve run into lately that prided themselves on customer service and didn’t make me jump through any hoops in order to use their guarantees. Apparently, they’re a local company - just on the other side of St. Louis from me. I don’t know how much more business I’ll need to do with them (how many whole-house TV antennas do you need anyway?), but I hope to run into them again.

Kudos, Antennas Direct. You’ve made me happy I dropped my Charter Cable.

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com

A few weeks ago, I heard about a new social bookmarking service that was starting up. I’m not usually into following “social-whatever” trends, but this one caught my eye. The service was curiously named Tip’d and it offered Digg-style voting for finance-related topics. I signed up and immediately fell in love with the service.

Niche sites such as Tip’d are great if you don’t feel like wading through the noise in the Digg community. As a reader, it helps you find what you’re looking for faster. As a publisher, you have a better chance that your content will be seen by the eyes you’re targeting. Add to that a strong application, a growing community, and a nice visual style, and Tip’d quickly became one of my favorites.

Tip’d boasts nearly 1800 registered members and a growing list of partner sites helping to continue to grow the site. With the public release, they also introduced a few new features and improvements:

Private messaging between users

A 3-minute edit window for story submissions

12 categories for organizing the stories

A new server to speed up user interaction

And a “Topple” button, just in case some spam slips through the cracks

I encourage you to give Tip’d a look and find me while you’re there. My username is ThatOneCaveman. While you’re there, feel free to promote your favorite articles from my blog and others so Tip’d can grow and continue to offer the best of the finance world right on your desktop.

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com

This has been a rough third quarter here with us tapping our savings to pay for finishing our basement and to pay down debt, so our cash flow has been decidedly negative for some time. Couple that with preparing for the new baby and setting up my daughter’s new bedroom, we’re nearly out of cash altogether. With that in mind, one thing has become very clear: Christmas is going to have to be much leaner this year.

After analyzing our assets and income projection, we decided we can allot no more than $250 to gifts this Christmas - and my income from blogging is going to have to pay for it all. In order to force us to keep that budget, we’ve instituted a cash-only Christmas. We will only pay cash when buying gifts this Christmas.

Why Cash?

By pulling out the cash ahead of time and slowly emptying the envelope, it will help us keep our spending reigned in and will give us a good visual benchmark of how much we’ve spent and how much we have left. When paying for gifts with a credit card, it’s easy to ignore the numbers as they add up and quickly out-spend your budget. But with cash, when it’s gone, there’s no more spending!

And by setting a budget, pulling out the cash early, and spending it wisely, you’re forced to get more creative to create or purchase gifts with far more meaning. According to JLP at AllFinancialMatters, 12 million Americans are still paying off last Christmas. I wonder how much of that money was spent on meaningless and thoughtless purchases of junk.

Gifts always have much more impact on the recipient when it’s an important gesture to them. In all cases, quality is way more important than quantity. I would rather receive one moderately-priced gift that fits my needs and likes exactly than a room full of presents that were purchased “just because.” (And I’m speaking from experience, here…)

What About the Internet?

I hate having to deal with the holiday shopping crowds and internet shopping provides a great opportunity to avoid those crowds. But, obviously, internet shops can’t accept cash for your purchases. So what are you to do?

What we do is to have the envelope sitting nearby when shopping online. By keeping it close, it’s easy to check your remaining budget. As you add things to your shopping cart, you pull out the equivalent amount of money from the envelope and set it aside so it can’t be “re-spent”.

We have a second envelope set up specifically to cover our credit card-driven internet purchases. That money will remain in the envelope until our credit card bill arrives. Only then will we deposit that money back into our checking account and pay the bill.

Half the Dollars; Double the Fun!

Ok, maybe “double” is a bit of an exaggeration, but we’re definitely not going to have any less fun this Christmas! Both my wife and I are having fun getting creative with each other’s gifts and looking for less-traditional sources for presents. I’ve been faithfully shopping Goodwill (and Goodwill’s online stores), Amazon’s used-product sellers, and other thrifty places.

My wife has gotten ambitious with her knitting and is making presents for both sets of parents as a way to reduce her cost. So far, she’s fashioned a potholder for each of the mothers and now she’s working hard on an afghan. Hand-crafted gifts are usually inexpensive and hold great meaning for the recipient since it shows they are worth the time and effort needed to create a personalized gift.

Enjoy It, No Matter What

A budget-crunched Christmas doesn’t have to be a let-down. In fact, it really gives you the opportunity to take Christmas back to its roots as a family-centered (and Christ-centered) holiday instead of the mass-merchandiser’s boon they’ve conditioned us to expect.

How has the economy and your life’s events changed Christmas for you this year? What does your Christmas budget look like and how do you plan to keep faithful to it? I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com

This time last year, I called to complain about what I felt was an unfair increase in my cable bill. I only had basic cable and internet and they were going to raise my rates over 10%. Instead of making me pay more, the phone operator found a way to move me to a promotional plan that actually gave me more - expanded basic and digital service - and would cost me less. Well, that plan ended this week and what was a $60/month outlay suddenly ballooned to $100/month. Needless to say, I didn’t want to continue paying that amount.

When I arrived home from work last night, I called up Charter Communications and after a short wait, I asked the phone representative (Yvonne from Wisconsin) if there was anything she could do to help me reduce my cost. What I was trying to imply - but should have stated directly - is that I thought $60 was more than enough for the benefit I was receiving and I didn’t want to pay more than that. Instead, I got something else altogether.

After about three minutes of complaining at her computer, verbalizing all the codes she was entering in the system, and trying to make small talk, the first plan Yvonne finally offered me was a promotion that would “only” cost me $80/month that would provide me nothing more than what I was already receiving. Once I finally convinced the lady that my goal was to spend less and instructed her to only check for plans that cost no more than was I was paying before, things became a little uncomfortable.

For the next ten minutes, she clacked away at her keyboard without saying much. Occasionally she would pipe in with a, “No, I can’t offer that,” or a, “This package doesn’t apply,” but mostly she was silent. When it became clear that there were no packages (that she would offer me) in that price range that included the expanded basic service (and my daughter’s beloved Disney channel), I inquired about dropping to just basic TV. “I don’t know why you’d want to downgrade. You know you’re only going to want it back and then you’ll have to pay for it to be reconnected,” she lectured me. “Your daughter is going to miss her shows and you’re going to just come back up.” That’s when I really got annoyed. The conversation from that point went about like this:

“Honestly,” I told her, “the basic TV package doesn’t offer me much more than I can get with an antenna. All I’m paying for is the standard local broadcast stations, a public access channel, and a bunch of home shopping networks. Out of 26 channels, I would only watch the ones I could get for free otherwise. So why should I even bother moving down to basic?”

“Oh, I wouldn’t trust those antennas. My son-in-law thought he could do the same but I warned him… Within a few months, he came to me asking if there was any way I could help him waive his reconnect fees. It doesn’t matter how good of a signal you think you could get, you’re just going to want your cable back,” Yvonne, the Charter Communications representative warned. “I strongly recommend against dropping your cable because you’ll just end up paying the reconnect fees when you inevitably come back.”

What she didn’t know is that I’ve already tested two different antennas and found that I can access all the digital signals coming from Saint Louis quite clearly - even from within my house.

“I really don’t care to argue about this, but I already know that I can access everything I want with an antenna. Let’s just cut TV service altogether and just stick with the internet,” I decided.

Yvonne replied, “Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you. All I know is that it’s not as good as cable and I don’t want you to have to pay the reconnect fees when you come back.”

“Trust me, at this point I’m not interested in coming back. What my antenna can’t pick up, I’ll search for on Netflix. What I can’t find on Netflix, I’ll find on the internet. I don’t feel like arguing this anymore.”

“Ok then, I’ll schedule the appointment. There will be a $13 fee for the truck to come out and disconnect your service. Don’t be afraid to call us out when you realize I was right and you decide you want your cable back. Thank you for calling Charter Communications.”

That sign-off was the last straw. Now, I am not only going to drop my cable TV service, I’m going to drop Charter cable altogether. Charter has been nothing but a thorn in my side for the last 6 years I’ve been a subscriber, anyhow, and this insulting and argumentative conversation provided the extra motivation I needed to tell them to shove off. They raise rates for no reason and consistently reduce the number of channels they offer me in an attempt to lure me to higher-priced premium packages.

The first thing I did when I got off the phone was to go online and order an antenna to install in my attic. After a bit of research, I settled on this TV antenna, a signal booster to help distribute the signal throughout the house, and a digital converter box for my older TV (using one of the government coupons). In just four months, my savings from dropping cable will more than pay for this new equipment. Hopefully the antenna will arrive before the cable shutoff date, but at this point I really don’t care - I just want Charter gone.

As far as dumping internet as well, I mentioned to the Charter Communications representative that AT&T is offering DSL in my area for $30/month with a free DSL modem and an extra $100 bonus for switching from cable - and that rate is guaranteed for 24 months. Even after telling this to the phone representative, they weren’t moved to match any part of it. After the work in my basement is finished and my media distribution equipment is all in place, I’ll call Charter and tell them to take a hike for good and sign up for AT&T DSL.

Last night was unpleasant. In the end, I was left with a waste of a 30-minute phone call, a healthy dose of frustration, a bitter taste in my mouth, and an extra bill of $13 for them to come out and disconnect my video service. I can’t wait for my antenna to show up so I can enjoy free TV and a clear digital signal. Hopefully AT&T’s DSL service will work out, but only time will tell for that. Even so, it’ll take a Herculean effort for Charter Cable to win me back, now.

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com

A co-worker of mine asked me why we were celebrating something as trivial as paying off a car loan. To us, this was no trivial act. We paid over $3,000 extra this year alone to ensure that we would pay it off early. It took a lot of saving, scrimping, and sacrificing to reduce our debt burden.

In my eyes, paying off any large debt is no trivial thing, even if you paid just the minimums every month. It’s completion is a testament to your drive to work off your debts and achieve financial freedom. So if you’re wondering what you should do when you pay off your debts, keep these suggestions in mind.

Celebrate Your Successes

There are many great opportunities in life to celebrate, but a milestone such as a completing the payoff of a debt is a big deal. It comes at the end of a long, hard struggle to push down the balance and, if you’re lucky, pay it off early. While a car loan isn’t a huge deal when compared to the size of a mortgage, the fact that we reached our first target is cause for celebration.

Don’t Go Overboard

While celebration is important, it’s essential that the celebration not undo your hard-fought gains. It is a nearly $16,000 loan that we paid off, but in reality, we’ve basically just freed up the $300/month we were paying toward that loan. If we were to go out and buy a new $2,000 TV on a 0% interest for 12 months credit card, we would immediately eliminate over half of our cash flow gains. Make sure to keep your reward reasonable (almost always less than one month’s payment of the original debt) or else you’re just giving yourself an excuse to get right back into debt.

Regroup, Then Attack Again

Taking a bit of time off from debt elimination to reward yourself also gives you a bit of time to collect your wits, rest from the previous battle, and prepare yourself for resuming the attack. If you take too much time off, you risk losing your momentum and can even lose ground to your debt, but a one-month lag time between paying off one debt and resuming your attack on the next is ok.

Focus On Financial Freedom

The goal is to achieve financial freedom and you do that by continuing to reduce your debt. It’s ok to take a breather occasionally and celebrate your accomplishments. In fact, it’s almost essential.

If you’re working toward paying off your debt, congratulations and keep at it! Just don’t forget to reward yourself for your hard work and remember to continue to enjoy your life along the way.

(c) 2007-2008, That One Caveman, http://www.thatonecaveman.com
In between trips to Lowe’s for yet more supplies for the basement and a stock-up trip to the grocery store, we stopped by our credit union to take care of some business. Having just been paid and having plenty of snowflake money saved up that we needed to apply to some debt, we decided to take the plunge and pay off the last of our car loan. I knew we were close to the pay-off amount, so it only made sense to go ahead and pull the trigger.

As we stood in line and waited for a cashier to free up, a wave of excitement washed over me. This is a loan we got into because we were desperate for a new vehicle to replace an old, dying car. We didn’t shop around enough and we didn’t work hard enough to secure the best deal, so the frustration of a minor failure has shadowed this loan from the day we opened it.

I stood there with my restless daughter in my arms and my wife ready to write out that final check and I was feeling a rush because this poorly-executed decision was almost behind us. We learned a great deal and we paid our dues and we’ll not make the same mistakes again - and now the slate was almost washed clean. In mere moments, the car would be completely ours and the loan would be gone almost a year ahead of schedule.

Finally, a cashier motioned us forward and we explained to her that we intended to pay off our loan. She nonchalantly typed in our information and read our closing balance to us: $738. With a quick sweep of my wife’s pen, our debt was gone. Nothing more than another zero in a database somewhere and one less payment holding us hostage. For a moment, there was a quick breath of freedom and it smelled nice. And, boy, that smell was addicting because all I can think about now is paying off the next debt as soon as reasonably possible.

In a year of chronicling our financial journey, I have often written of the debt snowball and now we finally have the opportunity to implement it ourselves. The $300/month we had allocated to paying for this car will go toward paying off the short-term loan my parents have floated us to help us finish our basement and toward driving down the 8.375% home equity loan that we took out to secure the mortgage we needed to purchase this house. With the extra income I’ve been making and the snowflake money we’ve been accumulating, it shouldn’t be too long before we’re nearing another pay-off day and another rush of joy.

If you are working toward debt freedom, keep at it because the feeling of reaching the finish line is something everyone deserves to feel. I don’t think I can adequately describe it in words; it’s something you have to experience for yourself. And once you do, it’ll take you over and soon you’ll be addicted to debt elimination. And there’s certainly worse things to be addicted to! Good luck. It is so worth it!
