Buying In Bulk Isn’t Always the Best Option

by That One Caveman on January 15, 2009

This past weekend when I went shopping for diapers for my new daughter, I came upon a wall of packs of diapers of varying quantities and brands and prices. It was an overwhelming sight.

Our diaper brand of choice is Pampers, so I focused on those packs. The three sizes were appropriately priced:

Size Price Unit Price
78-pack $18.99 $0.2435
100-pack $19.99 $0.1999
152-pack $29.99 $0.1973

But after considering the $1 off coupon I held, the pricing balance changed just a bit:

Size Price Unit Price After Coupon New Unit
78-pack $18.99 $0.2435 $17.99 $0.2306
100-pack $19.99 $0.1999 $18.99 $0.1899
152-pack $29.99 $0.1973 $28.99 $0.1907

Suddenly, after applying the $1 coupon, the largest pack was no longer the best option.

While you’re generally not able to use coupons at warehouse stores — where unit prices are generally lower than retail stores — coupons can really change the game at a retail store.

Don’t forget your acquisition costs. If you have to make a made dash to buy more, that could offset the dollar coupon.

Although my oldest is 15 and my youngest is 9, I still remember that you can NEVER have too many diapers.

We try to maximize our diapers at BJ’s. They often send out coupons so we try to time our purchases to use them.

I agree though that at a retail store, or f there’s a limitation on the coupon, you cn sometimes get a better deal on a smaller package.

Before you say “YUK,” please consider cloth diapers! A service (if one exists near you) will cost about the same as disposables; doing your own will provide your little one with a nice start on a college fund.

We had two in diapers at one time! Cloth!

Trust me, I haven’t given up on cloth. I would prefer if we went cloth, but I’m still working to convince my wife (who is responsible for the majority of the diapers). After this last weekend, she’s starting to get more comfortable with the idea. Now that she’s learned to sew, I’m working on convincing her to sew her own.
