I am very big on saving a bit here and there without sacrificing everything I want to experience on holiday. Booking over 60 days in advance, setting the times of travel either Tuesday or Wednesday instead of Friday-Monday, and setting up accommodations @ a B & B over a chain hotel will add up to more money to use for things that you deserve. Examples would be dining @ a fine restaurant one night, going out on the town, or even just taking day trips on the side by using public transit (train, bus, etc.) so you can see and enjoy more.

My wife and I go to a bed and breakfast every year for our anniversary. There is no better way to vacation for a long weekend then staying in the B&B. They are relaxing and you get to meet a lot of new people.

I have not tried bartering with a B&B, yet, but I have bartered with others. In my case, I offered computer business support in exchange for a photography session. If you can forge a near-personal relationship with the owner or manager of a local small business, you can often set up certain off-the-book agreements that are mutually beneficial.

If you’re a handyman, you could offer to do some repair work. If you’re into computers, you could offer to do some web design or tech support. If you’re into landscaping, you can offer those services. There are a number of ways you could barter – just make sure you’re at least proficient in the service you’re hoping to provide, otherwise you may turn them off of bartering with anyone else.
