Friday Link Love - First Business Trip Edition
Filed under: Link Love
Tomorrow I will be leaving for my first business trip ever. Coincidentally, this will be the first time I’ve spent 24 hours or more away from my wife since we were married nearly 5 years ago. I’m taking plenty of things along to entertain and distract me when I’m at the hotel: a personal finance book, my laptop (hopefully I can connect to the hotel’s wireless internet to make some new posts), and my DS (because I’m so addicted to Puzzle Quest).
Unfortunately, those entertainment devices will do me absolutely no good as I’m stuck in 2 days worth of boring meetings and two days of driving. When I return Tuesday night, I will be very glad to be home. It seems like these kinds of trips will be more common now that I’ve landed the promotion I sought. That’s the price of increase responsibility, I suppose.
But on the bright side, the company has approved overtime for my hours on Saturday and Sunday, which means I’ll gross an extra $500 or so on my next paycheck. After my taxes and my 401(k) get their cut, I’ll probably net somewhere near $400. That is certainly a blessing! That money will either completely pay for my new bike or be a huge snowflake for an extra car loan payment. We’ll see which way the wind blows when that check arrives in two weeks.
This week there were many great posts, so I decided to let my Link Love list grow to fit them all in. Here they are, in no particular order:
- Gather Little by Little was caught by surprise by the problems with what otherwise might have been his dream home. If the situation we faced when we bought our home is any indication, problems with repossessed homes are common.
- The Honest Dollar said farewell to blogging. Let’s hope this isn’t a permanent “goodbye” since her posts were often very useful and detailed.
- Get Rich Slowly asked, “What’s the reason for saving and investing?“
- The Simple Dollar gave a visual walkthrough for creating his made-at-home laundry detergent. I was going to do this, too, but my soap failed spectacularly. Then we bought our HE washer and decided not to risk our new “baby” with some untested concoction.
- All Financial Matters listed five things he and his wife want their children to know about money. I think his list is spot-on and we’ll be teaching our daughter the same.
- Mrs. Micah wondered, “What’s wrong with being in the middle class?” I wonder the same, too. We’re happy and comfortable - I couldn’t imagine needing more.
- I’ve Paid For This Twice Already… reminded us that sometimes it is the amount of money you make as the reason you’re not further ahead than where you are.
- Newcomer to Friday Link Love, Master Your Card, believes America needs a recession. I have similar thoughts that I will probably share soon.
- Blueprint for Financial Prosperity shared a brief look at five budgeting systems.
- And if those systems don’t excite you, Consumerism Commentary gave an alternative way to smooth out the budgeting bumps.
- Free Money Finance answered the question, “What is the best way to make more money?“
- Wise Bread urged us to slow down and save $0.54 per gallon on gas.
Have a great weekend! See you next week.

I’ve only been married 9 months, but still never more than 24 hours without hubby. Someday it’ll probably come when he’s going to philosophy things and I have to stay home.
Hope your trip goes well and good luck not being bored. :)
Thanks for the mention.
